Research at the CCG
The Center for Genomic Sciences is a community of approximately 70 staff members, out of which 35 are researchers, with the objective of contributing to the advance of the scientific knowledge of Genomic Sciences.
Research is organized in seven Programs or Laboratories. Each program is directed by a Full Professor, who usually works jointly with other professors, as well as postdoctorals, technicians, graduate and undergraduate students. This organization is highly successful in promoting collaboration and facilitating larger research initiatives. Research is performed basically on bacterial models, plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) and human genomics.
One of the most important recent achievements is the completion of the full genome sequence of the symbiotic nitrogen fixing bacterium Rhizobium etli, which is in fact a step towards the development of Genomic Sciences in Mexico.
Research and outreach at the Center have been funded by UNAM, through national grants from UNAM-DGAPA and Conacyt; by international grants from the National Institute of Health, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the National Science Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the European Community, the Department of Energy, and by private funding such as the Fundación Río Arronte, among others.
